Bye 2023, Hello 2024

Just like at the beginning of 2023 with the year 2022, I’m glad that 2023 is over. My 300th post summarized what last year was like for me.

I definitely want my 2024 to be better than the last 2 years.

Here are my goals for 2024:

Finances

  • Reduce overall expenses: over the last 5 years, my overall expenses have remained stable and in the same range. They even slightly declined during the pandemic. It tells me I’ve kept lifestyle inflation in check. That being said, I’ve set a goal to cut my expenses by 10% this year.
  • Experiment with cash envelopes: in line with the above point, I’d like to try this system with my groceries. I don’t see it to be convenient with my other expenses though.
  • Figure-out my mortgage situation: with the many rate hikes levied by the bank of Canada, my mortgage payment increased by $ 500/month. I’m also not building as much equity as previously. As my job/financial situation was very uncertain last year, I wasn’t able to do anything. I’ll explore my options and decide accordingly.
  • Rebuild my back-up fund: 2023 decimated my financial reserves. Now that my financial situation has stabilized, it’s time to rebuild.

Personal

  • Prioritize physical and mental health: for 18 months, I was without extended health insurance. I kept medical care to the bare minimum. Paramedical, dental and vision care are very expansive here. Now that I have extended health insurance through work, I need to catch-up on much needed healthcare.
  • Keep rebuilding my social life: same goal as last year.

What about you? How was your 2023? What do you hope to accomplish in 2024?
